The MA Artist Educator programme is designed for artists who work in formal and informal educational contexts and are critically conscious of their pedagogical approach to teaching in the arts. It will provide you with an opportunity to develop as professional practitioners in arts education. You will reflect on your own practice and observe the arts practices and pedagogies of others, both locally and globally. You will have the opportunity to transform your practice for your own benefit as well as that of fellow students, the community and industry, and to contribute to the growing field of research in arts education. Artist educators are drawn from, and engage with, the full range of the arts from the creative and performing arts, to visual, design and curatorial practice. Emphasis will be given to practice-led research and the teaching of the creative arts. As a fledging artist educator, you will learn to integrate your own arts practice with your teaching, so that the two processes inform and enhance each other. The programme is designed to develop the artist/practitioner/educator/researcher.
Practicing artists and active educators should apply. Applicants will be committed to developing future generations of emerging artists. They will wish to know more about educational theories, curriculum design, delivery and resources as well as assessment strategies. Applicants will build upon their skills and knowledge, and develop strategies to support students to break boundaries, experiment, research, innovate and create new contemporary work. Candidates will be engaged in studio or practice based arts education. The cohort will represent diversity in the arts, and may include musicians, fashion designers, sculptors, animators, theatre directors, dancers, film-makers, community artists, graphic designers, and more.
The programme engages in discussions about teaching the arts in a global city where many arts traditions from East and West collide, mingle and transform into new hybrid art forms. You will journey through the three semesters of work that correspond to the following areas of investigation:
Phase 1: Investigating & informing practice/pedagogy
Phase 2: Transforming practice/pedagogy
Phase 3: Innovating, researching and writing a dissertation on practice/pedagogy
We encourage the integration of theory and practice in the teaching of the arts and demonstrate pedagogy and arts-based projects informed by educational theories. You are asked to consider the integration of theory and practice in your teaching, and to articulate the relationship between industry connections and community-based arts-making, creative collaboration and the role of technology in your arts practice and teaching. Delivery is through short intensive periods of between two and ten days held at LASALLE (usually on weekends, evenings and term-breaks) with tutorials and projects taking place between the intensive periods of study. You will be working with Professor Ruth Bereson and Dr. Kie Watkins.
Alumni of LASALLE’s MA Artist Educator programme go on to work as arts teachers (working across the educational sector in primary, secondary and tertiary education) and artists working in a wide variety of disciplines (in music, dance, theatre, fine arts, film, media arts, design and more), Community artists working in a wide variety of contexts (with youth groups, seniors groups, corporate training), arts education programmers and directors working in a wide variety of professional contexts (museums, art galleries, performing arts companies), and arts education consultants.
