SCAD Atlanta presents On Air, an exhibition of recent and new work by Paris-based artist Laurent Grasso, in conjunction with France-Atlanta 2013. Coordinated by SCAD executive director of exhibitions Laurie Ann Farrell, this exhibition features film, neon, sculpture and painting and focuses on Grasso’s interest in observation, control and surveillance. As is characteristic of Grasso’s practice, the works included in this exhibition operate together to create a unique and unusual environment that subverts the viewer’s instinct to accept a single perspective as fact.
His film On Air, features a falcon fitted with a micro camera that films while flying over the United Arab Emirates; as the video switches camera angles, the viewer experiences the scene as the hunter, flying over the lunar-like landscapes and as the hunted, watching the falcon soar through the air. The film, which was produced in conjunction with Sharjah Biennial 9 (2009), transforms a traditional form of hunting into an archaic spying tool, evoking a living and unidentifiable drone.
The immersive experience of this exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the way information is collected and transmitted through technology and media. As the artist describes: “The work included in On Air deals with the contemporary desire to monitor, code and track everything through ever-evolving technology in order to create a sense of control over an increasingly complex reality.”
Grasso will follow up this exhibition with a brief residency in Savannah.
The exhibition, lecture and reception are organized as part of France-Atlanta 2013 and are free and open to the public.

Biographies:
Laurent Grasso’s work has been exhibited extensively worldwide, particularly in Europe and the U.S., notably in solo exhibitions at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (Montréal, 2013), the Jeu de Paume (Paris, 2012), the Bass Museum of Art (Miami Beach, Florida, 2011), as well as in many international biennales.
Additionally, Grasso has created several installations in the public space. Grasso was awarded the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2008 and is the subject of major monographs such as Uraniborg (2012), Future Archaeology (2012) and Laurent Grasso: The Black Body Radiation published by Les Presses du Réel. Grasso lives and works in Paris and New York. He is represented by Sean Kelly Gallery in New York, Galerie Chez Valentin in Paris, and Edouard Malingue Gallery in Hong Kong.
Laurie Ann Farrell is executive director of exhibitions for the Savannah College of Art and Design. In this role, she directs the exhibition program for the SCAD Museum of Art and all SCAD galleries in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia; Lacoste, France; and Hong Kong.
