The School
Established in 2000, ifs internationale filmschule köln gmbh is consistently ranked as one of the best film schools in Germany based on its outstanding student support, extensive technical resources, and active festival participation, including a Student Academy Award in 2012.
In cooperation with the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, the ifs offers bachelor’s degrees in Screenwriting,
Directing, Creative Producing, Cinematography, Editing Picture & Sound, and Visual Arts, as well as an international M.A. in Screenwriting, and is currently developing several new master’s programs. In addition, 12 further education programs provide training in a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from Production Design to Interactive Media.
The school is a member of CILECT, the International Association of Film and Television Schools, and cultivates partnerships with a global network of film schools and universities.
The Program
The school’s new international M.A. in Serial Storytelling aims to provide talented young writers with the skills to succeed in and actively shape the innovative field of television series. Over the course of two years, students will analyze structures and characters from iconic serial narratives, and explore new ways of developing innovative serial storytelling formats for television and the digital media. Groups of up to eight students will work closely with noted scholars, industry professionals, writers, showrunners, and story editors from around the world.
The M.A. in Serial Storytelling investigates the potential of developing stories by rethinking authorship as a collaborative process. The program inspects the mechanisms of the writers’ room – including the roles of staff writer and showrunner – as an innovative and pioneering model for all writers who are interested in the creative outcome of collaborative thinking.
The program will be taught in English to an international group of 8-15 students.
The Job
For a period of approximately 2 months (April/May 2014), the Screenwriting Department is seeking a Guest Lecturer to provide practical insights into the collaborative aspects of working in a writers’ room. We are looking for a showrunner / head writer with substantial work experience on a successful TV series, experience of leading a writers’ room, and an active interest in passing on their knowledge to talented young writers. Over a period of six weeks, this fixed-term position will focus on practical work in a mock writers’ room situation. In a combined role of teacher and showrunner, the Guest Lecturer will work in two parallel workshops with 4-6 students each. Since the focus of this class will be creative collaboration rather than developing the students’ own series ideas, the Guest Lecturer is expected to bring an original idea for a series to the workshop.
Applicants are requested to send a CV, a letter of motivation, and a course outline defining both the expected coursework and teaching approach. We look forward to receiving your application by 15 October 2013.
The ifs internationale filmschule köln gmbh is located in Cologne, one of Germany’s media capitals. In addition to remuneration the school will provide accommodation for the entire stay and a contribution to travel costs.
