Founded in 1969, Sotheby’s Institute of Art is among the world’s leading postgraduate level institutions offering Master’s Degree programmes and PhD degrees, Semester and Short Courses in art scholarship, connoisseurship and art business. Students learn through first-hand examination of works of art in museums, galleries, auction houses and private collections.

Sotheby’s Institute in London offers a series of full-time, intensive 15-week courses each academic semester. The courses are validated by the University of Manchester. Due to their unique structure and distinctive pedagogy, the courses attract a diverse range of international students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as professionals seeking careers in the art world.

The Institute is currently seeking to make an appointment to the following post, to commence in the academic year 2013–14.

Course Leader – Contemporary Art and its Markets Semester Course – Fractional Post (0.6 – 0.8 FTE)

Salary: 35,000 GBP–45,000 USD (pro rata, depending on qualifications and experience)

We are looking for an art historian with expertise in contemporary art, an interest in the art market, and a strong record of success in higher education teaching to develop and lead this new full-time semester course, which will be launched in January 2014 and will be offered in both the spring and autumn semesters. To be validated at the upper undergraduate level, this intensive course will introduce students to art and its transformations from 1945 to the present day. It will explore changes in the market for the kinds of art produced in this period as well as the attempts made by artists at different times to undermine the market, critique it, or adapt to its commercialism. PhD preferred.

Reporting to the Director of Semester and Summer Programmes, duties for this position will include:
–Course planning and curriculum development based on knowledge of relevant fields
–Some core teaching
–Liaising with consultant lecturers, guest speakers and arranging venues for student visits
–Maintaining and building new relationships with key figures whose involvement may enhance the quality of the course
–Ensuring conformity with the requirements of university validation, including the administration of student assessment
–Contributing to the academic life of the Institute
–Engaging in scholarship
–Working with the semester courses coordinator in all aspects of the administration of the course
–Tutorial support
–Interviewing student applicants
