The Oslo National Academy of the Arts is Norway’s largest educational institution for artists and designers. Oslo National Academy of the Arts consists of six departments: Design, Visual Art, Academy of Fine Art, Academy of Opera, Academy of Theatre and Academy of Dance, and offers a variety of educational programmes at bachelor and master level within these fields.
Three fix-term positions for Associate Professor/Professor for contemporary art between 50% and 100% for four to six years
Artistic practice is at the core of the Academy of Fine Art’s activities and we aim to offer a stimulating platform for its development amongst students and teachers. We work across media, disciplines and approaches, dealing with formal or material concerns as much as post-conceptual, social or political issues. We are seeking an artist with a strong artistic practice and a distinct interest in art education. Some of the competencies particularly sought are in performance, sound, socially engaged practices and practices relating to contemporary philosophy and politics. The candidate’s tasks will include teaching, research, production of events, assessments, jury and committee work, as well as participation in managerial, financial and administrative tasks relating to his or her activities and those of the Academy as a whole.
Curator/Associate Professor (60%)
At the Academy of Fine Art, exhibition practice is considered an integral part of an artist’s practice and education. Through student exhibitions, teaching and other relevant activities the academy offers a varied and informed view on the production of art and exhibition making to our students. We are thus seeking a person who is well acquainted with the history of exhibition making and has a deep understanding of the importance of exhibitions within artistic practice, in addition to the pedagogical aspects and other forms of dissemination of artistic practice. The candidate should have a relevant discursive practice as a curator and be able to devise a programme focused on individual students including tutorials and discussions within the general teaching on offer. The candidate will also take part in the development of the role of the curator at the academy including its gallery.
One fixed-term position for Associate Professor/Professor for art and theory between 50% and 100%
At the Academy of Fine Art, we see theory as an integral part of an artist’s practice and we aim to offer a stimulating platform to our students for its development. We are seeking a person who will offer multi-faceted theory teaching within our curriculum, both on the BA and MA level. This may comprise art history, philosophy, contemporary art theory, critical theory, etc., in the form of courses as well tutorial guidance. Students should be led to develop a relationship between theory and their practice, and should be supported in learning to use theory as a tool for reflection, production and dissemination.
One fix-term Professor (20%) for four years in research and development in contemporary art
At the Academy of Fine Art, artistic practice and research is understood to be deeply interconnected and we aim to offer a stimulating platform for their development. We are seeking to engage an enterprising individual who will devise and implement a strategy for the integration of student and staff’s artistic practice and research in collaboration with the Academy’s management. The focus of activities will lie on the Academy’s fellows (within the Norwegian Artistic Research Fellowship Programme, corresponding to artistic research or practice-based PhD programmes in other countries). The candidate’s task will be to develop a range of inspiring events, publications, teaching formats etc. discussing and presenting the fellow’s artistic practice and research. He or she will guide the fellows in their research projects and help coordinate their research activities. The candidate may also develop applications and projects of the Academy’s teaching staff within KHiO’s research and development programme in connection with the Academy’s research priorities. Furthermore, he or she will work on recruiting interesting candidates for the Norwegian Fellowship programme at the Academy.
