The newly renovated Graduate Studio Center at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is a state-of-the art facility that helps to empower graduate artists and designers to create transformative work, engage the broader public, collaborate, and make connections among ideas and people. The center provides 120,000 square feet of academic and exhibition space, including an auditorium/lecture hall that gives students and the broader public a place to learn from faculty members and visiting artists; a café on the first floor to connect the College with the neighboring Station North Arts and Entertainment District; an indoor atrium and an outdoor plaza provides spaces where visitors and students can gather, meet, network and relax. Just as important, the building houses 177 studios; state-of-the-art digital, computer and photo labs; facilities with ventilation systems designed specifically for artists, a fabrication workshop; and programming space for low-residency summer programs.
The new space aids in attracting diverse audiences to exhibitions, discussions and entertainment events, while providing additional culinary service and triggering cascading improvements to the aesthetic image of one of Baltimore’s most important educational and cultural destinations.
