Ideal for students ready to launch an art career or in the midst of preparing for competitive MFA programs, the Studio Art Intensive Program offers a powerful, unique learning experience.
The program’s intimate size and individual focus offers:
• One-on-one guidance by professional artists,
• Space to create and build your portfolio,
• Practical tools for developing your art career, and
• Immersion into NYC’s vibrant arts culture and community—including studio visits; lectures, panel discussions, and workshops by prominent artists and architects; and inspiration from the Academy Museum’s collections.
At the National Academy School, our focus is inspiring students to tap into their creative vision while equipping them to launch a professional art career—whether directly or through preparation for entrance to prestigious MFA programs.
Personalized curriculum
Through a guided process of exploration, students select an area of concentration from painting, sculpture, printmaking or new media. Once a concentration emerges, student and artist-mentor collaborate to develop a curriculum that includes studio-based classes, art theory, and philosophy. Special attention is given to portfolio development, critical thinking, and marketing.
Each student is required to enroll in four courses in their area of focus each year. These courses generally require 12–15 hours per week. In addition to courses in their main area of focus, students are required to enroll in eight electives each year. Students chose their electives with the guidance of advisors and mentors. Elective courses generally require 3–6 hours per week each. In total, Studio Art Intensive students are required to enroll in twelve courses per year.
The Studio Art Intensive culminates with a solo exhibition in the Academy School’s newly designed gallery.
Director and faculty
Lead by Maurizio Pellegrin, Director of the Academy School, the Academy’s faculty is composed of national and international professional artist-teachers. The School’s curriculum reflects this dynamic with educational offerings that are engaging, practical, and relate to the challenges of working as an artist today.
Note for international students
The National Academy School is glad to discuss your various visa options and help you in the process.
