Apolonija Šušteršič is appointed Head of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art
Apolonija Šušteršič’s artistic practice is related to a critical analysis of space, focused on the processes and relationships between institutions, cultural politics, urban planning and architecture. With a leading international profile as an artist as well as a track record in academic leadership, Šušteršič is to take up her position in January 2013.
Having first studied architecture in her native Slovenia, Apolonija Šušteršič continued with visual arts at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. From 2003 to 2008 she was professor and head of “Monumental Department” (Department of Public Art) at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Šušteršič has participated in a wide range of international exhibitions and developed research-based projects within and beyond international contemporary art institutions. This includes solo shows at the Moderna Museet Stockholm and Moderna Galerija Ljubljana and participation in the Berlin Biennale; Luxembourg City of Culture; Edinburgh International Festival; and the 12th Architecture Biennale, Venice. Most recently Šušteršič was shortlisted for Artes Mundi 5, the highest international art award in the UK and exhibited at the National Museum of Wales.
Joan Jonas, Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professor for performance at the RCA School of Fine Art
With the support of the Leverhulme Trust, the internationally-acclaimed video art and performance pioneer Joan Jonas will be a guest professor at the RCA in the spring term, where she will run a series of dedicated workshops, seminars, screenings and public lectures. During her residency, she will also be working on a web performance for Tate Modern.
Jonas’s work has been exhibited internationally most recently at documents 13; Museum of Modern Art, New York; MACBA, Barcelona; the Venice Bienniale; Performa, New York; the Sao Paolo Biennale; the Incheon Women Biennale and the Yokohama Triennale. In 2009 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum honored Joan Jonas with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her extraordinary contributions to the field of contemporary art.
Jonas has taught at numerous art schools worldwide including Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, Netherlands; CCA Kitakyushu, Japan; Kunstakademie Stuttgart, Germany and, since 2000, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA.

Applications for the RCA School of Fine Art are accepted until the 14th of January 2012. The School of Fine Art at the Royal College of Art comprises four MA programmes: Sculpture, with a focus on critical spatial practice; Painting; Photography and Printmaking. The School of Fine Art offers as well for the first time a specific focus on moving image and performative practice under the umbrella of the existing programmes.
Artistic research is a key area in the School of Fine Art at the RCA and our MPhil and PhD programmes are committed to the pursuit of independent research within the framework of contemporary critical discourses. For these programmes we accept applications throughout the year.
US applicants please note that the College is designated as an eligible institution for a Guaranteed Student Loan under the Direct Loan Program.
