to be the guest of the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK):
Lecture, discussion and reading

31 October 2012

On 31 October 2012 the author Sibylle Lewitscharoff will be the guest of the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) in conjunction with the Formation of Presence: President’s Choice series of events:

Lecture:
Pfingstwunder (Pentecostal Miracle)
“The grave difficulty will be considered of accommodating God in a novel as a secret agent (discretely, of course). Another theme will be how to give a Pentecostal touch to all the novel’s protagonists, including cats, mice, crows and who knows what else. How might the theme be dealt with in a modern novel without getting bogged down in inanities? How to give a hearing to Pentecostal speeches, or rather get them down onto paper, without irritating the reader? After all, these are passionate words spoken in tongues which we cannot understand without ourselves undergoing a Pentecostal renewal.”

Discussion:
Sibylle Lewitscharoff in conversation with Dr. Hubert Winkels, cultural editor at Deutschlandfunk, literary critic at DIE ZEIT, co-inaugurator of the new Wilhelm-Raabe-Prize since 2000, and spokesman of the Wilhelm-Raabe-Prize jury.

Reading:
from the novel Consummatus

The HBK will be live-streaming the event on 31 October 2012, 7pm on www.hbk-bs.de.

Sibylle Lewitscharoff is winner of the 2010 Berlin-Literature-Prize and the 2011 Kleist-Prize, the Ricarda-Huch-Prize, the Marieluise-Fleißer-Prize, as well as the 2011 Wilhelm-Raabe-Literature-Prize for her novel Blumenberg.

She is the third guest of the new Formation of Presence: President’s Choice series at the Braunschweig University of Art. Within the framework of the event series guests from the realms of art, education, politics and economics will be invited to the Braunschweig University of Art over the next five years to consider and discuss the term Presence.

“Over the course of time presence has been understood differently, as a state, but also as a transition. How are we present in time, and how is our presence attested to in time? The formation of presence is informed by translations from the past into the future. But what responsibility do universities assume for the realization of education, culture, now and in our future?”, asks Prof. Dr. Hubertus v. Amelunxen, President of the HBK and initiator of the event series. The series began with a lecture and an exhibition in the university gallery by British artist Anthony McCall. The second guest in the series was the dissident Chinese writer, poet, musician and winner of this year’s Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, Liao Yiwu, with a reading, concert and discussion.

The Oeffentliche Versicherung generously supports this series of events and subscribes to its understanding of social responsibility.
