In Search for Common Ground
If we look beyond state and private property driven developments, which have dominated cities during the last fifty years, throughout Europe we can encounter a rich tradition of cities and communities formed on the principles of the commons. Today, when the way out of the debt crises is seen in even more draconic privatization and thus “evaporation” of public property, can the re-constitution of the commons be a viable option pointing to new directions for our cities—beyond the agenda of profit and away from the neo-liberalization that brought us where we are?
We are looking for engaged participants/professionals would be eager to join on a journey throughout Europe and Sweden, to investigate the state of commons, meet protagonists of ground breaking practices, in a quest that would lead to an international conference in the spring of 2013.

Architectural Conservation (60 ECTS)
MODERNISM AT RISK – Architecture from the modern movement
Theme: Conservation & transformation of modern architectural heritage
The conservation and development of post-war modernism requires knowledge of societal development, architectural ideas, modern materials, and techniques. We need to actively seek out and classify these valuable objects now, before they disappear. In international style, contemporary modern, and brutalism, there are rational, raw technical, and material solutions and a scale which is not clearly embraced by the builders of society today. Through accumulation of knowledge, practical work, study visits, and original group work, the course lays the foundations for refining and working with the buildings and environments that make up modern urban cultural heritage.

About Mejan Arc at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm
With a history dating back to 1735, the Royal Institute of Art is one of the oldest and most influential higher education art institutes in Europe, with architectural studies on an advanced level.
Mejan Arc—The School of Architecture—is a forum for architectural and urban studies at the Royal Institute of Art that offers one-year post-graduate courses in three disciplines, including Architecture, Architectural Conservation and Art & Architecture. The goal of Mejan Arc is to engage society through the generation of relevant and tangible projects, as well as the creation of working networks that continue outside the academic realm. Projects generated at the school often become independent platforms that develop on their own.
An increasingly urban world necessitates new perspectives. The three programmes share an interest in the City while differing in their focus—history and identity, social aspects, and future urban possibilities. By utilizing methods of research and design we explore the potential of urban environments in a rapidly changing world.

Scholarship to cover the study fee
Please note—for these programmes, applicants from countries outside of the EU/EEA area and Switzerland will have to pay an admission fee of 900 SEK. If admitted, there will then be a study fee of 289 400 SEK per academic year.
The Royal Institute of Art will offer one scholarship, for those who are obliged to pay study fees. This applies to all Swedish Higher Education institutions from the academic year 2011/12. For more information, please see our website.
