Senses, the AUC Art Program’s 2012 Annual Senior Student Exhibition, opens at the Sharjah Art Gallery at the AUC Center for the Arts on May 6, 2012. The exhibition features the work of 23 art students across disciplines including digital media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installation, performance, and video art. Selected works represent each student’s senior project, the culmination of years of creative research, critical thinking, and experimentation.
The exhibition will be open to the public on May 6th at noon and will remain on view through June 2nd at 6pm.
Student works can also be viewed in an online gallery of images and statements, which will provide insight into the creative process behind each student’s thesis project. The online gallery will go live in May 2012 at the Sharjah Art Gallery website and will be also on exhibit until June 2, 2012.
The Art Program in AUC’s Department of the Arts provides students with a space for creative practice in a cross-disciplinary environment emphasizes theory, practice, and critical inquiry. Offering students an experimental platform for creative freedom and innovation, the program encourages students to challenge mainstream conceptions of visual art, engage in critical self-awareness of their own art practice, and establish a broader understanding of the issues and contexts that inform art practice in today’s local and global visual cultures. Grounded in the belief that the visual arts are a fundamental force in society, the program prepares future art practitioners for critical work within the region’s emerging post-revolution cultural environment and the broader global art world.
The Sharjah Art Gallery is the artistic and cultural center of the Department of the Arts at The American University in Cairo. The gallery presents exhibitions and educational programming with a special focus on contemporary art in the Middle East and North Africa. Its cultural and educational mission is to present the work of innovative visiting artists and curators to enhance the discourse on contemporary visual arts and to advance partnerships with educational institutions throughout the region.
