The Director is responsible for planning and implementing all aspects of the exhibition program for the Binghamton University Art Museum. The Director will oversee and provide vision for all exhibitions, visitor experiences, and education programs, and direct all administration of the galleries, including the budget, contracts, personnel-related issues, and hiring and directing key program staff. The Director will develop program seasons of public exhibitions; advise faculty, staff, student, and professional curators in organization and realization of exhibition projects, ensuring adherence to best curatorial practices and compliance with scheduling and budgetary guidelines. Duties also include making curatorial decisions for invitational exhibitions, promotional materials, maintaining the gallery’s online presence, maintaining the department’s galleries and university’s permanent collection, and supervising gallery staff.
QUALIFICATIONS: Significant professional gallery experience and a master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in an art, art history, museum studies, or related field. Substantial gallery management and/or educational/curatorial experience are required. In addition, strong interpersonal, managerial and organizational skills; expertise in design and exhibition technology; demonstrated knowledge and experience in the traditional and contemporary art world, gallery practices, exhibition design, and art gallery/museum education, are required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Teaching, successful fundraising, and grant writing experience, preferred.
RANK & SALARY: The University Art Museum Director is a full-time, twelve-month, professional staff position. Salary will be competitive.
