California College of the Arts is pleased to announce the Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program. This program continues CCA’s Photography Lecture Series and pays tribute to the visionary artist, educator, and CCA faculty member Larry Sultan, who passed away in 2009.
Each year this series brings to campus photographers and other artists, writers, curators, and critical thinkers to give public presentations, critique student work, and participate in events and projects. The newly renamed program is realized through the collaborative efforts of CCA, Pier 24 Photography, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Estate of Larry Sultan.
In addition to sponsoring a public lecture by each invited guest, the program enables students in CCA’s Graduate Program in Fine Arts and undergraduate Photography Program to have invaluable personal contact with some of the pioneering artists and critical thinkers working today.
The Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program focuses attention on the Bay Area as a unique center for the rigorous inquiry of contemporary photography. This innovative program works in concert with the region’s many museums, galleries, and private collections, including Pier 24, to encourage the critical study of photography and the practice of fine art.
Recent visiting artists and faculty have included:
Rineke Dijkstra, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Jason Fulford, Cuny Janssen, Stephen Shore, Alec Soth, Sophie Calle, Thomas Demand, Paul Graham, Naoya Hatakeyama, Walid Raad, Erik Kessels, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Catherine Opie, Sharon Lockhart, Malerie Marder, Doug Rickard, Michael Schmelling, Roger Ballen, Liz Cohen, Katy Grannan, Richard Barnes, Laurel Nakadate
