Our Philosophy
An education at SFAI is driven by values of experimentation, critical and conceptual thinking, and rigorous studio practice. The school has been home to such world-renowned artists as Ansel Adams, Richard Diebenkorn, Annie Leibovitz, Kathryn Bigelow, Kehinde Wiley, and George Kuchar.

We build on this legacy by creating a learning environment that empowers innovators across media and disciplines. Students in the Low-Residency Graduate Program receive the benefits of individualized attention from SFAI faculty members, a dedicated cohort of fellow students, and the richprogramming of SFAI’s Summer Institute.

Studios and Housing
Each Low-Residency MFA student receives an individual studio at SFAI’s Graduate Center. SFAI also offers summer housing, making for an easy transition to San Francisco.

Financial Aid
An education at SFAI represents a significant investment in your future, and we are committed to helping talented and motivated artists pay for school. Financial Aid is available in the form of institutional grants and federal loans.

San Francisco Art Institute
Founded in 1871, SFAI is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious schools of higher education in contemporary art. Focusing on the interdependence of thinking, making, and learning, SFAI’s academic and public programs are dedicated to excellence and diversity.
