The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s (SMFA), Post-Baccalaureate program is an intensive year of studio art study and practice, closely advised and supported by dedicated faculty. For recent college grads, mid-career professionals coming from another focus or practicing artists wishing to expand their ongoing studio work, this one-year certificate program provides excellent preparation for graduate-degree studies in art or an independent practice.

Post-Bac students design their own path of study with close mentoring from faculty and are encouraged to explore across media. Weekly studio visits by SMFA faculty—who are all practicing artists—offer students the chance to obtain critiques and advice on a personalized level. Weekly seminars covering important contemporary topics, field trips and dialogue with museum curators, collectors, gallerists, critics and visiting artists, foster professional networking opportunities.

SMFA shares its campus with the internationally renowned Museum of Fine Arts, Boston—one of only three schools nationally that are partnered with a major museum. Our students have unsurpassed access to an encyclopedic collection of art and the Museum’s curatorial, conservation and history departments.

Much more than a rigorous studio experience, SMFA’s Post-Bac program encourages engagement with the thriving art scene of Boston, and beyond. Our Post-Bac graduates leave with a critical awareness of contemporary art and practice and a clarified understanding of their educational and professional goals.

About the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston:
Founded in 1876 and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA), is one of only three art schools in the country affiliated with a major museum—the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Our mission is to provide an education in the fine arts—for undergraduate and graduate artists—that is interdisciplinary and self-directed. This education values cultural, artistic and intellectual diversity; it embraces a wide range of media; it stresses the development of individual vision and its relation to culture in general; it values equally the knowledge gained by thinking and doing; it is deeply engaged with the world as a whole. If the mission is constant, its practice is always transforming. For more information about our programs and partnerships, visit www.smfa.edu.
