Explore Venice through Your Art (June 9–24, 2012)
Create, live and breathe art in one of the world’s most beautiful and mysterious cities. Taught by Mags Harries and Julie Graham, both practicing artists and longtime instructors at SMFA, this course will be divided between studio and field work. An art/architecture historian will guide you through the cultural richness of Venice, and you will thematically address the physical and visual sense of place. We encourage an interdisciplinary and experimental approach; you will explore this timeless city through mapping, drawing, photography, time-based media, collage, temporal installation and object making. www.smfa.edu/ce-venice
New This Summer: Art as Process (June 11–21)
This workshop is an intensive, multi-disciplinary course that focuses on experimentation and the creative process rather than a pre-imagined or calculated end product. Combining group meetings with individual studio time, this course is for those interested in challenging their concepts and skill sets at an art school renowned for its interdisciplinary philosophy and practice. www.smfa.edu/ce
SMFA Pre-College Summer Studio Program
5-week program (June 24–July 27)
3-week program (June 24–July 13)
At SMFA we recognize that contemporary art is truly interdisciplinary. Our Pre-College program invites high school juniors and seniors to explore new possibilities and forms of artmaking—to experiment across all media, build conceptual thinking skills, collaborate, learn problem solving techniques, critique and discuss your work and the work of your peers. You will also receive one-on-one guidance on portfolio building, career paths in the arts and the college application process. The program’s small size places community engagement at the center of the experience, with individualized attention through our graduate mentor program and 6:1 student to faculty ratio. Join us in Boston this summer for a truly innovative experience. www.smfa.edu/precollege
About the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston:
Founded in 1876 and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA), is one of only three art schools in the country affiliated with a major museum—the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Our mission is to provide an education in the fine arts—for undergraduate and graduate artists—that is interdisciplinary and self-directed. This education values cultural, artistic and intellectual diversity; it embraces a wide range of media; it stresses the development of individual vision and its relation to culture in general; it values equally the knowledge gained by thinking and doing; it is deeply engaged with the world as a whole. If the mission is constant, its practice is always transforming. For more information about our programs and partnerships, visit www.smfa.edu.
