NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Art and Art Professions Expands Its Global Art Options for BFA, MFA, MA, Advanced Certificate, and Visiting Students.

Global ArtSites

Our Global ArtSites programs in Berlin and Ghana allow undergraduate Studio Art majors to work closely with international artists and explore art across continents and cultures. Students in the Global ArtSites program spend a semester at the NYU Berlin ArtSite, and then a semester the following year in Ghana. Both sites provide enhanced facilities and faculty in Studio Art.

About the Berlin ArtSite
In the heart of the city’s most vibrant artistic neighborhood, the Berlin ArtSite includes studios for sculpture, painting, drawing, digital printing, and video. Non-studio courses are offered in interdisciplinary projects and contemporary art. Faculty include renowned artists Trisha Donnelly, Delia Gonzales, Ana Finel Honigman, and John Keckner.

About the Ghana ArtSite
Courses include workshops with African artists in sculpture, weaving, and painting, as well as classes in photography, video, postcolonial theory, and art history. Artist and photographer Lyle Ashton Harris is in residence each fall, working with students and curating exhibitions for the Dei Centre of African Art, where he is Co-Director.

Other NYU study abroad locations include Prague, London, Florence, Madrid, Shanghai, Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, Prague, and Buenos Aries, for BFA students who are not interested in applying for the ArtSites Program.

New York/Paris Opportunities at the Sorbonne

The Department of Art and Art Professions has been selected by the Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Foundation as a Studio Art Partner in an exciting Paris-New York exchange program, which enables outstanding MFA students from NYU and the Sorbonne to trade places for one year.

A special three-week summer intensive course will also be held at the Sorbonne in May 2011. Taught by Department Chair Nancy Barton and curator Michel Cohen, this studio art course is open to BFA and MFA students, as well as selected non-majors and visiting students by application.

Projects in Sculpture: Interdisciplinary Art Praxis in Berlin, January 2011

This two-week course with renowned artist Trisha Donnelly engages art students in cross-media experiences of art making, as well as critical theories of art and culture. Studio time will allow students to create their own work in drawing, video, photography, performance and interdisciplinary media and will combine studio art practice with an intensive look into the rich history of Germany’s experimental practitioners. For MFA students and upper-level BFA students, as well as visiting students by application.

Exhibition and Display of Art and Material Culture in London, January 2011

A survey that examines contemporary issues in the exhibition and display of art and material culture. The theory that underpins practice is considered within thematic groups: art world ecosystems; typologies/frameworks for exhibition making; curatorial roles; interpretation; authenticity, and identity; establishing value; and spectacle. Includes lectures, discussions, site visits, and guest speakers. For MA students in Visual Arts Administration and Costume Studies, and visiting students by application.

Art Therapy in India, June 2011

Participate in an internship program that involves visiting schools, orphanages, and/or other social service organizations. For MA students in Art Therapy and visiting students by application.

Summer 2011 in Venice, Italy

Engage in intensive studio work, with critiques by a distinguished faculty of international artists. Courses in painting, drawing, video art, Venetian art history, art theory, and criticism. For artists and art teachers in the Advanced Certificate in Studio Art, the three-summer MA in Studio Art program, the MA in Art Education, and visiting students by application.
