Documentary and contemporary art

This situation is central to art schools. Young artists often brush with documentary writing when experimenting with protocols and techniques which at first appear to breach artistic boundaries.

A number of Masters in “Documentary Studies” in France and Europe already exist. These demanding and innovative programs are nonetheless based within a specific field: the documentary tradition. The aim of this diploma is to operate at the crossover point.

This postgraduate program is designed for students in art or cinema, young exhibition curators or art critics who wish to extend their training with a year of experimentation around the interplay of issues between documentary and contemporary art, without being confined to a single technique or material. The group is not solely composed of film makers or artists. Its diversity is a sign of plurality. Some of the areas covered by this postgraduate diploma are : promoting a collective dimension to work, following through production, producing materials (films, texts, exhibitions, performances), carrying out work on theory and art history, questioning modes of exhibiting, promoting experimentation, questioning documentary protocol and the issue of archiving, blending knowhow and practice, drawing on the European dimension by looking at the problems of translation.

The postgraduate year will conclude with an event : a cycle of projections, exhibition, publication, seminar, conference and meetings whose form will be decided on by each group. With the aim of establishing the work of the postgraduates in the fields of art and research, and supporting their work in terms of production, a variety of partnerships and meetings are envisaged with European documentary festivals, art schools such as Le Fresnoy (Tourcoing) [National Studio of Contemporary Arts], Femis (Paris) [The National School for Visual and Audio Crafts] or Le Pavillon (Palais de Tokyo, Paris) [Creative Arts experimental Workshop], institutions such as Le Confort Moderne (Poitiers) [Concert Hall and Exhibition Centre], programs such as the Atelier de création radiophonique (France Culture Radio, Paris) [Radiophonic Creative Workshop] or pointligneplan (Paris) [Contemporary art and cinema], and universities. An annual publication and a website will detail the ongoing work.
