Graphic Design (MFA)

Hoffberger School of Painting (MFA) – among the most selective graduate painting programs in the country, has a singular focus: engaging a select group of highly talented painters in the process of discovering the sources of their originality and vision.

Mount Royal School of Art (Multidisciplinary MFA) – for artists in a diverse array of media and aesthetic approaches seeking to build disciplined studio practice and rigorous critical thought through studio explorations, readings, and a shared seminar and visiting artists series.

Photographic & Electronic Media (MFA) – a platform for exploring the social and artistic uses of optical and electronic media technologies, grounding artistic practice in rigorous investigation of historical and critical contexts—provides the technical and intellectual skills for professional practice and teaching.

Rinehart School of Sculpture (MFA) – students explore the creative possibilities of space, emphasizing technical mastery and conceptual sophistication, balancing physical interaction with equipment and materials with theoretical discussions and investigation.

Studio Art (Summer Low-Residency MFA) – the first program of its kind—allows experienced artists to complete the MFA in four, six-week summer residencies, with independent work during the academic years. Students pursue an area of studio concentration while developing as artists and renewing their connection to the artistic community, producing a body of work that culminates in a thesis exhibition.

Art Education (Summer Low-Residency MA) – engages experienced art educators in building skills as reflective practitioners, studio artists, and contributors to the field; students plan and execute qualitative case studies in their schools, write research reports, draft articles for publication, develop proposals for conference presentations, and develop work for a culminating thesis exhibition.

Community Arts (MA) – a unique credential for visual artists seeking a career in art-based youth and community development, grounded in the principles of social justice—balances coursework and studio explorations with intensive, real-world experience in community settings over two summers and one academic year.

Teaching (MAT) – prepares artists who are well grounded in studio practice and committed to the growth and development of others to seek certification as K-12 teachers; explores the teacher as a mediator between the world of art and the world of the learner; integrates hands-on experience in teaching with rich coursework in practice, current theory, and research.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Fine Arts – an intensive, one-year program for those seeking a studio experience to build a portfolio for further graduate study or to deepen their involvement in making art. Through undergraduate studio classes and graduate seminars, students have access to the full resources of MICA.

More About MICA’s Renowned Graduate Programs: MICA’s Master of Fine Arts programs were ranked among the top four in the nation, with those of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Yale University, and School of the Art Institute of Chicago, by U.S. News & World Report in its “Best Graduate Schools” edition, released on March 26, 2008. This ranking was based “solely on the results of a peer assessment survey of art school deans [asked to] rate the academic quality of programs” at 220 colleges and universities, according to the magazine. MICA was nominated for inclusion in the survey by top art college administrators nationwide as a program “noted for…excellence” in the area of fine arts.

In addition to being ranked 4th overall for its Master of Fine Arts programs, MICA was also ranked 4th in painting/drawing, 6th in graphic design, 7th in sculpture, 12th in multimedia/visual communications, and 15th in photography in the specialty rankings. MICA was listed among the top 25 best design schools in the U.S. by ID Magazine. In recent years, MICA has been ranked No. 1 in the nation among specialty schools as a producer of Fulbright Scholars by The Chronicle of Higher Education. And for the past three years, MICA has been among the 12 institutions rated “the country’s most influential graduate art programs” for inclusion in Art Chicago’s annual New Insight exhibition of work by “top MFA students” nationally.
