SPRING THESIS SYMPOSIUM

In the contemporary era, we rely heavily on visual networks that animate sites such as alternative art spaces, space-age replication technologies, and the ritualized urban landscape. CCA’s Graduate Program in Visual and Critical Studies offers an interdisciplinary and culturally diverse arena within which to bring critical analysis to bear on today’s highly politicized visual world.
In this daylong public symposium, nine graduate candidates in the program will interrogate the politics and poetics of visual culture. Three visiting critics will serve as moderators. The presentations will engage with current issues in media criticism, visual activism, subcultural performance, urban trauma, diasporic rituals, replication technology, neo-tribalism, and specific works by artists such as Tacita Dean, Bernice Bing, Ai Weiwei, and Francis Alÿs.
