Brooklyn College MFA program: Call for Applications
BROOKLYN COLLEGE OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK MASTER OF FINE ARTS STUDIO PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2009-2010

Brooklyn College’s Art Department offers a two-year master of fine arts studio program taught by a faculty that includes internationally recognized artists whose work is found in such prestigious museums as New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art and who have garnered numerous prizes, awards, grants, fellowships, and other honors over the years. Many of them are represented by galleries here and abroad. Because we are located in the heart of the art world, the department draws on a vast community of distinguished artists for its faculty as well as for the many visiting artists, art historians, critics, and curators who supplement and greatly enrich our programs. Some of the most famous artists of the last half century have taught here, among them Berenice Abbott, Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Allan D’Arcangelo, Elizabeth Murray, Philip Pearlstein, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Lucas Samaras, Clyfford Still, and William T. Williams. In addition, our students have easy access to New York City’s great museums and countless galleries.

The 48-credit program offers concentrations in drawing and painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and digital art. It has a fine-arts rather than a commercial orientation and seeks a balance between the traditional and the new in its mix of students, faculty selection, and course content. Students usually focus on one concentration but take courses in other areas and in art history. Periodically, students’ work is formally reviewed by the full faculty; students also benefit from informal studio visits from faculty members as well as from the artists and critics who are part of the outside visitors program. Graduating students participate in a large MFA thesis exhibition, usually at a Manhattan gallery.

MFA students are provided with private sky-lit studios or semi-private spaces in group studios, depending on their needs. Facilities include state-of-the-art digital laboratories, an extensive and well-equipped printmaking suite, and a handsome student gallery. The comfortable Meier Bernstein Art Library within the department––for studying, reading, browsing, and socializing––offers books, periodicals, and Internet access. Our classrooms and workrooms, including the sculpture shops and photography darkroom, are often open to students when not in use by classes.

The program attracts students from across the United States and around the world, ranging from accomplished artists represented by commercial galleries to those with little or no professional experience admitted for their talent and promise. A great many of our graduates are successful artists, some of whom also teach at leading art schools and universities. Others have become commercial artists, illustrators, computer graphics designers, architects, art directors, cartoonists, art restorers, and fashion designers––bringing their fine-arts sensibilities to these related fields. A number have won such major honors as Guggenheims, Fulbrights, Pollock-Krasners, and the Prix de Rome.
