Portland State University’s Department of Art offers a Master of Fine Arts in Contemporary Art Practice with an emphasis in either Studio Practice or Art and Social Practice.

Dedicated to helping students understand and explore the ways artists and their work function within a larger social context, the two-year interdisciplinary program is built around a core of directed study with a strong foundation in theory. Opportunities for critical dialogue are offered through an acclaimed lecture series of nationally and internationally recognized visiting artists.

Within the new Art and Social Practice emphasis, one of only three such programs in the country, students explore the social role of the artist and transcend traditional boundaries through direct engagement with the public. Under the direction of artist Harrell Fletcher, the program takes social interaction and the relationships between people and their surroundings as starting points for a wide variety of projects in multiple media.

Students in Studio practice engage in independent research and production, combining disciplines or concentrating on a single discipline, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital or time-based media. The program offers individual studio spaces, multiple galleries, state-of-the-art computer graphics and multimedia facilities, as well as a new 4,000 square foot materials lab.

Among the visiting artists for 2008-09 are Andrea Zittel, Mark Dion, Frances Stark, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Buster Simpson, Darren O’Donnell, Matthew Higgs, Edgar Arceneaux, Julie Ault, Mark Beasley, Luck Dragons, J. Morgan Puett and Michael Rakowitz. Past visiting artists include Dan Graham, Allan McCollum, San Keller, Lisa Sigal, Byron Kim, Anne Daems, Fritz Haeg, Robert Pruitt, Rigo 23, Jim Drain, Jo Jackson, Chris Johansen, Marie Watt, Young-Hae Chang HEAVY INDUSTRIES, Edgar Heap of Birds, Andrea Bowers, Mark Fisher and Temporary Services and the Center for Land Use Interpretation.

Art and Social Practice faculty are Harrell Fletcher and Jennifer Delos Reyes. Studio Practice faculty are Pat Boas, Horia Boboia, Erik Geschke and Bill LePore.

Supported by a vibrant urban university, itself an integral part of one of the fastest growing creative centers on the West Coast, the Department of Art is within walking distance of the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, the Portland Art Museum, the Northwest Film Center and major downtown galleries and design firms. With over 800 undergraduate majors, a faculty of internationally recognized artists, designers and scholars, a growing and innovative graduate program and a dynamic roster of visiting artists, PSU’s Department of Art is a place where students from a variety of backgrounds interact, exchange ideas and broaden perspectives.
