MaHKU presents DUTCH ARTISTIC RESEARCH EVENT # 1, Utrecht

MaHKU

Since 2004 the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (MaHKU) has been the sole master program in the Netherlands to offer a one-year, interdisciplinary graduation course in artistic research. Through an intensive seminar program with artists, designers, architects, curators, and theorists, two main research themes are addressed. Departing from the question of intermediality, the department of MA Fine Art focuses on the position of the artistic image in a culture of visual information, whereas the department of MA Design focuses on topical forms of engagement from a transdisciplinary attitude. These research trajectories are developed and realized in close collaboration with global and local partners.

DUTCH ARTISTIC RESEARCH EVENT: DARE # 1 2006: SEPTEMBER 1-10

Together with Casco, Office for Art, Design, and Theory ( http://www.cascoprojects.org ), during 2006 MaHKU initiated a series of research activities resulting in an annual manifestation named Dutch Artistic Research Event (DARE). The first edition of this event will take place from September 1-10. Five locations in the city of Utrecht – Expodium, Academiegalerie, Casco, Universiteitsmuseum, Central Museum – will not only be platforms for presentations, but will also offer room for research-screenings and parallel panel discussions.

OPENING

August 31, 6-8 pm: Expodium, Vredenburgpassage 88; Academiegalerie, Minrebroederstraat 16; Casco, Oudegracht 366, Utrecht.

DARE #1: INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

In addition, in the context of DARE, an international symposium will take place in Utrecht’s Central Museum (Nicolaaskerkhof 10). This symposium will look at critical methodologies in the fields of art and design, focusing on research-based practices. Since research has become a well-recognized method within the fields of both art and design, the proliferation of its approaches has lead to a point at which a distinction must be made between critical practices and those that are limited to mediation of information. The first DARE symposium seeks to profile some of today’s more complex and critical positions, while attempting to highlight experimental and analytical modes of investigation that connect the fields of art and design to broader social and political arenas.

Presentations by Pauline Terreehorst (director Centraal Museum), Emily Pethick (director Casco), Henk Slager (Dean MaHKU), Martin Beck (artist), Daniel van der Velden (designer), Emily King (design critic Frieze), Esther Cleven (design critic/curator), Stephan Dillemuth (artist), Dave Hullfish Bailey (artist), Florian Pumhösl (artist), Wendelien van Oldenborgh (artist).

MaHKUzine: JOURNAL OF ARTISTIC RESEARCH #1

During the symposium the first edition of the Graduate School’s biannually published MaHKUzine, Journal of Artistic Research, will be presented. MaHKUzine #1 contributors are, among others, Annette W. Balkema, Max Bruinsma, Matthew Fuller, Pascale Gatzen, Jeanne van Heeswijk, Petran Kockelkoren, Lev Manovich, Arjen Mulder, and Studio UN.
