L’Ecole du Magasin, the first curatorial training program in Europe, is part of an international network that involves Independent study University Programs and schools based in contemporary art venues. L’Ecole du Magasin is the only one in France to be based in a contemporary art centre which produces its own exhibitions and events. This working environment provides daily opportunities for immediate observation and application of the contents of the program.

CO & CO & CO

Participants work independently on a group project, with the support of a pedagogical team. They take responsability for all aspects of its production (selection of artists’ works, budgeting, transport, insurance, loan procedures, editing, publication process,…) and decide together for the final form of the curatorial project : an exhibition, a book, an event, a symposium, etc.

They also have to edit a web site that accompanies the training session and communicates about the research.

The collective mode and group activity go beyond practical economy. Each year is a micro-universe of teaching, with a variety of disciplines and field experiments that are proposed and readjusted according to the group. Individuals are encouraged to emancipate themselves from the reassuring norms they were taught in, to experiment on a daily basis their personal resources and form a working team.

Theorists, practitioners (artists, curators, critics, historians, editors and publishers) coming from very different backgrounds teach on a regular basis or for shorter seminars, depending on the participants needs or interests and the project in preparation.

Candidates will have a university degree (in art, art history, philosophy,…) or professional experience in contemporary art. Study languages are French and English.

A maximum of 10 candidates will be admitted. The course is based in Grenoble.

Thanks to public support, this program is offered free of charge to the selected participants. They must pay their own living costs in Grenoble.
