PNCA will feature the work of faculty artist Daniel Duford and New York photographer Lucien Samaha in Dish. Fifty handmade pots created by Duford, collectively called “Viable Seed”, each contain a fragment of one of Duford’s graphic narratives. Dish begins with a performative feast at Ripe’s back room, using Duford’s vessels, with the feast documented by Samaha. The back room experience is then transported into the FG PS as an exhibition of the vessals and video.

Dish is curated by Nan Curtis, director and curator of PNCA’s FG PS, and by Stephanie Snyder, curator of the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery at Reed College with collaboration from the back room at Ripe. The exhibition and panel discussion are held in conjunction with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) 40th annual conference, March 8-11, 2006 at the Portland Convention Center.

PNCA also presents two other installations in connection with the NCECA conference; Composite and Fragile Ecologies.

Composite, in PNCA’s Swigert Commons, is a sculptural exhibition that investigates space and scale and the relationship to the ceramic medium. Wood, metal, video and sound, are integrated with ceramic elements in four site-specific works by artists Marc DeBarnardis, Rob Marzinsky, Ian McMahon and Nathan Sherman. Their combination of materials generates a variety of perspectives and encourages a prolonged engagement with the work.

The Manuel Izquierdo Gallery at PNCA presents Fragile Ecologies by Elizabeth Stanek, in collaboration with Andree S. Thompson and Valerie Otani. Stanek, Thompson and Otani use unfired clay and non-traditional clay processes as commentary on the state of the environment. Visitors to the installation will trigger motion sensors, which activate devices transforming the clay.

There will be a Artist Receptions for Composite and Fragile Ecologies at PNCA on Friday, March 10, 5- 7 pm.
