Len Lye (1901- 1980) was a pioneer film maker and kinetic artist of international standing. His films are recognised as groundbreaking work in animation and his kinetic sculptures have been exhibited and bought by major institutions in the United States and Europe. Just before his death in 1980 Lye bequeathed his collection to the people of his native New Zealand.
The Len Lye collection is held in trust by the Len Lye Foundation, in partnership with the New Plymouth District Council, at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. The Gallery was founded in 1969, with the deed of funds by a member of the community, Monica Brewster (nee Govett).
