–Unrivalled opportunities for established academics with passion for contemporary art, with a focus on 21st century China
–Exceptional access to Judith Neilson’s significant collection
–Fixed-term tenure, commencement date negotiable

Advance the global understanding of contemporary art as a source of insight into the impact of global change on China.

The purpose
This exciting new role will advance the global understanding of contemporary art, in particular on Chinese contemporary art, as a source of insight into the impact of global change on China. The endowed Chair and Fellowship will deepen the intellectual rigour of research into Chinese contemporary art—and, by extension, into contemporary art in general—by supporting the scholarly investigation of Judith Neilson’s significant collection of Chinese contemporary art and its framing in an international context.

The Judith Neilson Chair in Contemporary Art aims, through research, advocacy and teaching, to advance knowledge about, and public and artistic understanding of, the work of Chinese contemporary artists, as well as their training, ideas, influence and practices.

In support of the Chair, the Judith Neilson Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Contemporary Art will provide opportunities for students and scholars to closely engage with Chinese contemporary art for the purposes of teaching or academic study.

The occupant of the Chair and the recipients of the Fellowship will enjoy an exceptional level of access to the Judith Neilson Collection, which includes works created since 2000 by the most important and influential contemporary artists in China. Their research will contribute to areas of the UNSW Art & Design curricula that relate to Chinese contemporary art.

An outstanding, internationally recognised record of achievement in research, including measurable impacts influencing policy or art and design practice leading to the cultural significance of Contemporary Chinese Art

Capacity to expand rigorous research and teaching expertise in this field of academic enquiry within the Faculty through academic leadership

The organisation
UNSW Art & Design has evolved to become one of the most successful Art & Design faculties in the world, ranked in the top 40 by the 2017 QS World Rankings and number one in Creative Arts by the Australian Research Council. The Faculty has international relationships with important cultural institutions in all of the major art centres across the UK, US and greater Asia.

Some of the most exciting developments in contemporary art today are taking place in China, a rapidly growing nation of one billion people. Whilst industry and innovation play a vital role, deep and meaningful engagement with the art and culture of contemporary China is fundamental if Australia is to fully appreciate the value and original contribution Chinese artists make to the wider world.
