In the late 1940s, he traveled across Europe where he came into contact with the international avant-garde movement. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania in the Fine Arts Department, which he helped to establish in the 1960s.
His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in major museums and private collections throughout the world, such as Tate, London; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Centre Pompidou, Paris; MUMOK - Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna; MoMA - The Museum of Modern Art, New York. He was awarded the Prix Kandinsky and appointed member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. He died in Perugia in 2005.
