Seeking Associate Professor of Exhibition Studies

Associate Professor of Exhibition Studies (70%)

The Academy of Fine Art is now accepting applicants for Associate Professor of Exhibition Studies. This is a part-time, 70% fixed term position of six years with a possibility of an extension for a further period after public announcement.

Exhibition activities are an integral part of an artist’s practice and education. Through student exhibitions, teaching and other relevant activities the academy offers a varied and informed view on the production of art and exhibition making to our students.
We are looking for a candidate who is well informed within curating and exhibition history, and its place and role in the field of art. It is crucial that the candidate has a deep understanding of the importance of exhibitions and making projects public within an artistic practice. The successful candidate has an internationally recognized practice as a curator, experience with various educational formats, and a genuine interest in supporting and inspiring our students to the greatest extend possible. The appointed associate professor will be giving tutorials, teaching classes, workshops and seminars plus other educational activities.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for initiating and contributing to the public programme of the Academy in accordance with the research interests of the faculty, the student body, and the school. This work will happen in collaboration with the dean, the academic staff, and the programme coordinators. The public programme consists of events, seminars, exhibitions, conferences and publications. Promotion of the Academy’s public programme by fostering ties with national and international networks within the field is essential. The appointed associate professor is expected to actively contribute to the department’s strategic development and flexible use of resources. The candidate will also be involved in managerial, financial and administrative tasks relating to his or her field of responsibility. Participation in regular academic staff meetings is mandatory. Since this is a part-time position, workdays and hours will be determined according to local priorities and in discussion with the dean.

The following qualifications are required:
–Extensive curatorial experience of a recent date including documented artistic activity and/or research experience at a high international level with a curatorial practice as a specialization   
–Education at minimum master degree level within the relevant field  
–Documented professional experience of three years minimum within art education, curatorial practice, exhibition studies, art history, art theory or art criticism  
–Documented experience with and knowledge of self-organisation and artist-run cultures 
–Documented teaching experience and expertise in relevant educational theory and practice 
–Fluency in English (The teaching languages at The Oslo National Academy of the Arts are Norwegian and English. The person appointed to the position is expected to be able to gain basic skills in Norwegian within 2 years from starting the employment)

The applicants must also meet the following requirements:
–An in-depth knowledge of current developments of the international contemporary art scene, especially in the curatorial field  
–Extensive experience with and knowledge of curating, both from a historical and a contemporary perspective: including exhibition production, dissemination, organization of public programmes, publications and workshops   
–International network and experience of collaborating with educational institutions  
–Strong pedagogical skills and a disposition to inspire students   

Applicants are required to describe and document their entire range of qualifications and criteria set out in the job application with concrete examples. An expert committee, appointed by the Academy, will assess the applicants’ qualifications. Only applications and documentation submitted by the application deadline will be considered by the committee. The appointment committee for professional positions is the appointing authority. The qualified applicant may be asked to hold a trial lecture/conduct a trial tutorial. In addition to professional competence, emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.

In accordance with the Public Service Pension Fund Act (lov om Statens Pensjonskasse), 2% of your salary is automatically deducted and deposited into the State Pension Fund. Notice that eligibility for rights to welfare benefits from the National Insurance Scheme and the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund normally requires membership in the National Insurance Scheme, and that this is usually the case if a person resides in Norway.
