Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (PSOE) in Painting/Drawing
The Department of Art at UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts seeks a Lecturer (PSOE) in Drawing and Painting. The Department of Art offers both the Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) and the Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA). The starting date for the position is July 1, 2018, with teaching responsibilities commencing in September 2018.  Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

The Department of Art is looking for an experienced lecturer to teach a range of drawing, painting, and foundation courses.  The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of contemporary art with an active engagement with formal and theoretical experimentation, a thoughtful appreciation of historical precedent, and a conceptual ability to intersect with other art forms and new technologies.  Candidates must possess sufficient versatility to teach studio courses, critiques, and seminars, while also serving as a student mentor and advisor. As a department with growing pedagogical needs, we also seek an individual with demonstrated experience in curriculum planning and assessment methodologies.

The successful candidate will join a growing department of 20 full-time faculty. A heterogeneous group of artists and scholars, the department values inquiry and experimentation over specific ideologies and intellectual methods.  The department’s research and instruction examines how definitions of art play themselves out in contexts ranging from the personal to the public, from the gallery to the street. The department’s curriculum emphasizes that visual art is not a freestanding category, but instead takes shape through its intersection with other creative practices and knowledge domains.
