The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) is now inviting applications for its brand new Master Photography and Society.
Photography & Society is a two-year master programme starting September, 2018. The Master’s programme educates socially-engaged photographers of the 21st century, who possess an active interest in the technological, political, environmental and social role of the photograph.
The core of Photography & Society is image-making, at the same time the programme will challenge the students to foster encounters beyond photographic practice and utilise photography as a means to take part in global debate. It enables the students to mediate the relationship between image and society. These transformational demands can only be met if photographers are educated in how photographs are created, presented, discussed, used, and documented.
Photography & Society students are educated to master the full distribution chain, seamlessly moving from concept to making work and its presentation in various, often novel, forms.
Who should apply?
Photography & Society students have a desire to research and experiment, to question what they do and why, to be open to unexpected input and interested in innovations in their fields of interest. As researchers, they are both independent and collaborative and set on creating impact. Photography & Society is open to all (still image-) makers with a bachelor’s degree. This includes not only a degree in photography or any of its sub-disciplines, but also in the field of visual arts, digital media, visual anthropology and other non-linear communication disciplines. Preferably with at least three years of practical experience. The programme discourages applicants applying directly from a Bachelor programme.
Professional perspective
Photography & Society graduates strength lies in the capacity to understand complex social themes, helping to create a world shared by strangers regarding the general welfare. Graduates can determine their own positioning, bring ownership and find effective photographic forms and operate within complex settings.
Graduates may enter multiple fields, such as autonomous art practitioners, documentarians, visual researchers, curators, and activists, all creating work that is visually exciting and intellectually compelling, ready for work in any sector where photography and society intersect.

Please visit our website. Applicants are requested to submit a research proposal and a letter of motivation, a CV, and a portfolio of artistic work. Interviews are held following initial pre-selection.

In addition to numerous bachelor and master programmes, the academy offers preparatory courses and two part-time courses: Fine Arts and Photography.
