In a joint exhibition project, La Kunsthalle Mulhouse- Contemporary Arts Center and the Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg investigate how spaces influence our perception.
The project stemmed from local observation. Mulhouse and Freiburg im Breisgau are two cities which are geographically close, and yet their differences are more striking than their similarities. Going to Mulhouse for a few days means going to the North of France, whereas a city break in Freiburg im Breisgau is a trip to the South of Germany. You don’t feel or pack the same way! This may seem trivial, but maybe it is more significant than it first appears. This simple geographical difference implies different lifestyles. The exhibitions Mon Nord est Ton Sud and Your North is My South originated in this simple fact, although the works widen the question, applying it to other areas and other situations.
Mon Nord est Ton Sud is built on the idea of diversity across areas and how these areas are perceived differently. Geographic, political, social and economic areas are both independent and complementary. They exist at individual and collective levels, and above all they are the real or virtual places of subjective experiences, complex relationships and dual situations.
Your North is My South focuses upon places that do not have a geographical location, such as virtual space.
Curated by Sandrine Wymann, director of La Kunsthalle Mulhouse.
In partnership with the Museum für Neue Kunst, which is hosting the exhibition Your North is My South until October 7, 2018.
A bus service will operate between Mulhouse and Freiburg im Breisgau to allow visitors to see Your North is My South or Mon Nord est Ton Sud.
