“Artist as an Object” is an ongoing film series about emerging and established artists. The core idea of this series is to offer insight into the work and processes of the artists through interviews and non-technical presentations of their art.
Films will showcase artists who are pushing boundaries—aspiring artists who are advancing art in unexpected new ways and who dare to question its principles.
Our goal is to shed light on the ideas and motivations of artists and to help them share their unique views. We hope to achieve this by creating a different kind of cinematic experience: a sound-based series that puts emphasis on language.
Open call
Nonterritorial is accepting commissions for biopics, including submissions for the “Artist as an Object” series. This series focuses on artists who are working at the frontier of contemporary art and challenging the exhibition model.
Selected artists will have a chance to articulate their ideas on how they envision the future of art through film. The “Artist as an Object” series aims to serve as a bridge between artists working on similar issues and as a gateway for international exposure.
Nonterritorial pledges to store the biopics in an industry-standard archival format and to assist artists and patrons by providing the films in any encoding required.
How to apply
Please send a cover letter and a portfolio of your work, up to a maximum of 10 images. If you wish to be considered for the “Artist as an Object” series, please further elaborate on how your art practice questions the exhibition model. As an alternative to the portfolio, you may send a writing sample that you think is representative of your thoughts on the subject, along with a description of artworks that you would like to see produced.
All material must be submitted in PDF format. Artists and third parties working on behalf of artists can file an application via email: info [at] nonterritorial.pro
Who is eligible?
Everyone who wishes to commission a biopic is eligible to submit material. Artists who are questioning the exhibition model through their art practice or theoretical inquiry are especially welcomed to apply.

Collection
Nonterritorial has a growing collection of works from contemporary artists who question accepted ideas about art. For instance, the belief that artworks require a self-contained object with a compositional space or that we cannot draw articulated experiences from objects and actions that are subordinated to useful ends.
Imma
Nonterritorial collaborates with Imma, an independent laboratory devoted to artistic research. Imma investigates alternatives to conventional modes of artistic reception and spectatorship.
When we think of artworks, we often think of objects hanging on the walls or laying on the floor of a gallery. But does it have to be this way?
