New major printed edition by Kai Althoff available
Provinz Editionen is proud to announce the release of a major printed edition by the New York-based artist Kai Althoff.
A woman with a turban-like head-covering and a plain, buttoned-up dress with a pale collar dominates the scene, looming over an excited crowd of people. All of them men who are expectantly looking upwards; their hairstyle and hats mark them as Hasidic. The woman’s gaze is purposefully aimed out of the picture. She knows the significance of what is going on because she is the picture’s creator; she holds colored pencils in her hand. Beside her is a slim introverted youth whose strikingly exotic profile shows closed eyes and a tight-fitting red cap shielding his head. He is lightly touching the fabric that links him not only optically to the artist and otherwise seems unaffected by the goings-on around him. Prism-like windows in the background allow a glance into a barren landscape, here and there interspersed with trees and submerged in ocher-tinted light. A landscape populated by another group of Hasidic men in ecstasy or involved in ritual acts. Everything we see in this picture seems to hint at a mystery that dominates the scene, a mystery that is perceptible to the protagonists and has animated them into joyful expectation of something that remains invisible and incomprehensible to the viewer.
