This first solo exhibition of Şükran Moral in Germany shows a representative selection of her interdisciplinary works—installation, video, photography, drawing—from 1994 to the present, including two new installations produced specifically for the Edith-Russ-Haus: Child-Bride and Tales to a Young Girl.

A transgressive mind and a critical stance permeate her entire oeuvre. Her performances call disciplinary mechanisms, the influence of moral concepts, inequality, discrimination, power monopolies as well as the instruments of culture into question. In doing so, she critically and ironically enters into a constant dialogue with her environment and establishes relationships between public and private spaces, such as a brothel, a Turkish bath for men or a village square. On the other hand, Moral appropriates topoi and iconographies from an art context for the purpose of updating and transcending them.

Despite explicit references to her country of origin, the themes the artist addresses can be transferred to global contexts.

The exhibition is being accompanied by a catalogue.
Within the scope of the Turkey-Encounters Oldenburg.
Curator: Claudia Giannetti
