Abigail DeVille’s work is comprised of archaeological constructs imbued with cultural and historical cues, referencing canonical sculptures from recent art history, contemporary social issues, and the movement of solar bodies. DeVille is concerned with narratives of displacement and marginalization.
Through the materiality of her installations and sculptures, she makes hidden social landscapes visible. She shares critical feelings about the role and function of objects within art’s symbolic and financial economies. Her work explores the core of our relationship to artifacts and demonstrate an increasingly sophisticated understanding of her art historical heritage. What DeVille achieves by drawing our attention to the hidden lives of objects is much more discreet than what some of her predecessors sought, but no less important.
Abigail DeVille (b. 1981, New York City) received her MFA from Yale University, New Haven, and her BFA from Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. She has exhibited a growing constellation of site-specific installations in the United States and Europe, and has most recently shown her work at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Pinchuk Art Centre, Kiev, Ukraine; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Studio Museum, New York. Her work has been written about in the New York Times, New York Magazine, Artforum.com, Time Out New York, CAPITAL, Philadelphia Weekly, Interview, Black Book, NYLON, ArtNews, and PAPER Magazine. She was an artist in residence at the Studio Museum, Harlem, in 2013–2014 and at Harvard University 2014–2015.
