The gallery has the pleasure to exhibit a new series of Jorge Molder: L’échelle de Mohs.
In introduction of his exhibition, and by way of metaphor, Jorge Moder delivers us a small text:
“Last night, when I was going home I met my neighbor on the stairs, who told me: ’There’s an instant when the face rushes towards the mask and the mask towards the face, but it is not an encounter.’ Before falling asleep, I vaguely thought that, in the case of clowns, the face and mask coincide. But I still had time to say: if this were true, both the face and the mask would disappear, as they persist simply thanks to the unwavering gap between them. I slept well and upon waking swept away for good all doubts on this matter: I remembered the Mohs scale; it is based on the idea that a harder material can scratch another softer one which will never be able to scratch the former. I was perplexed by this assertion, since this was someone with whom I had almost never spoken, and it would have been more natural to talk about a point rather than an instant. I went to bed and once more began thinking about all of this. I then remembered a small story my mother would tell me when I was a boy, about a man who every day watched the same movie over again, waiting for something to change, although he knew that there was little chance that this would happen. This series of images is more or less about this kind of gap.”
Jorge Molder’s artwork is deeply connected with philosophy and literature. From these, his work draws a peculiar taste for the dark side of the mind, and for a subtle meteorology of ambiguities. Molder, indeed, is particularly interested in the metaphysical aspects that enter the everyday life of each human being. The artist amplifies this issue through the perception of his own image, and, not without irony, he seems to view himself as a stranger. Going beyond self-representation or introspection, Molder uses his own image , as well as all his metaphorical images, to attempt a reflection on time and being into the world.
Jorge Molder was born in Lisbon in 1947. Many exhibitions have been dedicated to this artist in Portugal and abroad: the 22nd Biennale of Sao Paulo (1994), the 48th Biennale of Venice – Portuguese Pavilion (1999), the South London Gallery (1999), the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris (1999), The Jeu de Paume in Paris (2002), Das Schwarze Quadrat in Hamburger Kunsthalle (2007), the Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian Lisbon and Paris 2009, Chiado 8 Lisbon 2010.
