Professionally edited Art Basel Conversations segments will be archived on both the Absolut Art Bureau and Art Basel websites.

The Kirlian, a bar by Jeremy Shaw for Absolut
10–16 June 2012
Volkshaus (No.5), The Gallery
Rebgasse 12, 4058 Basel
Hours: noon–11pm
From 11pm by invitation only
Absolut Art Bureau gave artist Jeremy Shaw carte blanche to conceptualize a fully operational bar to act as a unique place of conviviality, at Volkshaus No.5, The Gallery, just minutes from the fair. The result is a bar informed in equal parts by Shaw’s deep background in music and his interest in Kirlian photography, an outmoded photographic technique that captures the magnetic field, or presumably the emotional aura, of both inanimate objects and living things. The Kirlian will be a space full of hidden potentials, specifically soundtracked for daytime unwinding, evening socializing, and nighttime dancing. Shaw’s interest and explorations of the unseen have deeply informed his selection of an ambitious music program, showcasing artists ranging from obscure new wave DJs (Veronica Vasicka), to legendary cult television stars (Twin Peaks chanteuse Julee Cruise). For the full bar program please visit www.absolutartbureau/thekirlian.
These themes of the unseen will also be reflected in the cocktails served, which will feature ‘invisible’ flavors subtly mixed into unique, alchemical combinations.
