Everybody is familiar with a certain idea of ‘Family Life.’ We might enjoy it everyday, or look back on it with tender feelings. Other individuals on the contrary wish only to escape from what they experience as a stifling corsage. A so common issue appears to be much neglected on the contemporary art scene. The subject is burdened with a number of clichés. The concept of ‘Family Life’ remains too often frozen in its traditional interpretation. Many changes in society were leaving their fingerprints on family life, or were finding their origins in it. The family biotope is a living laboratory to test human role-playing and is in this respect anticipating on political life.
The family is also a cultural concept with a multi-layered history. It is inevitably linked to our essential myths of origin. It finds its continuation in law, fiction and popular culture. Home life is producing a wide range of trash that is linked to sentimentality. Nowadays communication technologies and mass media redefine the imagination of the family. This last one is as least important as the real family. On this level art may assume its role in representing and redefining the idea of the family.
