The works we will exhibit concentrate on two defined groups: conceptual and contemporary.
The aim of our proposal is to bring together and present works by a group of young and mid-career contemporary Latin American artists (mainly Venezuelan) and a group of Latin American Conceptualists, the latter due to our strong interest in Conceptual art practices and experiences emerging in different parts of Latin America in the 60s and 70s.
For almost two decades, we have witnessed a vigorous art activity and extremely heterogeneous body of work produced by Venezuelan contemporary artists, despite the political and economic turmoil. It is in this diversity that its richness resides. This generation of artists has experimented with all media, from performance to video installations, from sculpture to ephemeral art, from painting to digital photography.
The effect which both the modernist tradition and Conceptualism had on Venezuelan art facilitates understanding of the themes and artistic practices among the contemporary artists we will be exhibiting. Such is the case of Venezuelan artists Alessandro Balteo Yazbeck, Alexander Apóstol, Luis Molina-Pantin, Eugenio Espinoza, Argentine Eduardo Costa and Colombian Luis Roldán, where we can find close affinity to the production along conceptualist lines. Their art is built either from criticism of the modernist project and spirit, articulation to history, context, the notion of authorship, the creation of archives based on the notion of the archive and documentation.
On the other hand, Venezuelan contemporary artists Magdalena Fernández, José Gabriel Fernández and Juan Iribarren, who represent very different sensibilities, reveal some major features associated with abstract-geometric and kinetic movements from the 50s, 60s and 70s, which influenced artistic production of following generations in some Latin American countries.
During the mid-60’s, many artists retreated from a craft-defined art and shifted into the realm of ideas. In cultural centers like New York, this shift was done through reduction and dematerialization of the work of art and the focus was primarily on the material support. There were things that belonged to art, and there were things, like politics, that did not. In Latin America, for instance, something totally different took place and the accent was on the communication of ideas, and, given such turmoil, economic exploitation, cold war and dictatorial regimes in the region, a great percentage of the prevailing ideas dealt with politics. Thus, in Latin American conceptualism, politics were in. There is plenty of evidence about this statement in the works of artists that we will be showing at ABMB such as Juan Downey, Anna Bella Geiger, Marta Minujín, Margarita Paksa, Claudio Perna and Horacio Zabala.
Furthermore, we will have a one-person show of Argentine-American artist, writer and filmmaker, Leandro Katz. The installation, titled Moon Room, was specially created for Art Basel MB 2010 and consists of two video projections, photographs and drawings related to the moon. Moon Room was conceived as a space for meditation and relaxation within the hectic atmosphere of a major art fair.
