Playing with a unifying metaphysics of the micro, macro and media worlds, Michael Joaquin Grey presents six computational cinema works that re-envision critical moments in culture and phenomena. Grey creates software to break down the materials of film into its basic primitives — the building blocks of media. Using body signals and sound as catalysts, he reanimates and dematerializes existing mediated experiences in a process that creates ‘film objects’, ‘cellular films’ and ‘dream anatomies’ of the body. An expansive use of the medium, these works synchronize with the internal rhythms of each viewer, and produce new synesthetic and proprioceptive cinematic events. A groundbreaking effort that opens the door to a new genre, Grey’s computational works are not recorded and exist as dynamic systems performed in real time.

Computational cinema works to be screened:

Perpetual ZOOZ (Madonna and Child), 2005 – 2009
So What Moon Calendar (Special Director’s Commentary), 2005-2009
Between Two Milkbars, 2005
Sam Slime Life Cycle, 2005
ReEntry, 2005
ReReEntry, 2005

Grey’s computational film work will also be on view Jan 30 – March 30 at the Pacific Design Center, Los Angeles:
