ARDEN SCOTT
Recent Sculpture

April 19 – May 19, 2007

Artist reception:

Thursday, April 19, 6-8 PM

Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is proud to present our first exhibition of the work of Arden Scott, an artist from Greenport, New York who has been making sculpture since the early 70’s. The exhibition will consist of 8 recent works in which images of vessels and their riggings are fashioned from steel and bronze.

Inspired by her long time obsession with the sea and sailing, Scott uses the solid materials of bronze and steel to create drawings in which a delicate linearity glides quietly through space as if it were water. Some of these are ghost ships, silent, moving objects. Others of the objects are more solid as Scott fashions ballast from a steel plate, the solidity of the metal contrasting with the lightness of the rigging. They all refer to the history of making vessels, and at the same time, to our history of using vessels as a metaphor for our inevitable journey.

Sailing requires flexibility, the experiential feel for wind on water and an acceptance of nature’s unexpected ways. So it is with Arden’s sculpture. It is her deep connection with her materials that allows her to wrestle pieces of bronze and steel into objects that convey this sense of harmony with nature. Scott says about her work, “When I was very young, I wanted to run away to sea and sail the world. Art beckoned instead, and I gravitated to sculpture with its glorious possibilities. Again and again I return to drawing lines in space, like the rigging of a ship, and as necessary. Brancusi said that all sculpture is water. Amen, I say.”

Arden Scott lives and works in Greenport, New York next to Brewer’s Boat Yard where she keeps the Annie – a 28 foot sailboat she built over 20 years ago. She has exhibited her work at the Dowling College in Oakdale, New York, the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton and has received grants from the New York Foundation of the Arts and the Pollack-Krasner Foundation.
