Galería Hilario Galguera presents, Mexican artist, Gustavo Artigas’ solo show, Accidentes, Documentos y Ejecuciones Recientes, from March 17 to April 20, 2007.

Born in Mexico City, Gustavo Artigas (1970), studied Visual Arts at the UNAM’s National School of Plastic Arts between 1991 and 1995. In 1996, Artigas won the II Installation Competition organized by the Ex-Teresa Arte Actual gallery and in 2001 he performed a resident Project at Johannesburg, South Africa. Gustavo Artigas is currently one of the most representative Mexican artists known at international level. Structuring his work, since the nineties, around the notion of “the unavoidable essence”, “the surprise”, and the possibilities of playing games within a social context, and producing confusing responses before preconceived actions.

Artigas’ has widely exhibited internationally. Collective exhibitions include: Faites vos jeux! Art and Game Since Dada. Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz Liechtenstein / Akademie der Kunst, Berlin, Germany (2005); Hit and Run Platform Garanti and Smart Project, Istanbul, Turkey (2004), No lo llames performance, Museo del Barrio, New York (2004); among others. He has also exhibited individually: Unexpected, Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros (2006); Galería Dels Angels, Barcelona (2004); The Rules of the Game, A Space, Toronto, Canada (2003); Emergency Exit, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, México (2002).

Accidentes, Documentos y Ejecuciones Recientes, will demonstrate Artigas’ ability to both generate astonishment and perplexity as well as his ability to restate apparently daily themes. In this show, four pieces will be exhibited, three of them basing their proposals on a reflection concerning the limits of death; the other constituted by a complex installation composed by projections and photos of a mortal event. Voluntad Última, Obituario Blanco, Tres Tiempos and Sirena, are the works conforming this show.

Currently, Artigas is working on three projects: one for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, another for the Mexican Pavilion in the First Triennial of Architecture in Lisbon and one piece for the Juarez Project, in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The Te Manawua Museum organizes a retrospective show (1997-2007), which contemplates the edition of a book on Gustavo Artigas.
