The Paulo Cunha e Silva Art Prize final exhibition at Galeria Municipal do Porto includes works by the six finalists Christine Sun Kim (USA), Jonathas de Andrade (Brazil), June Crespo (Spain), Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela (Portugal), Naufus Ramírez Figueroa (Guatemala) and Olga Balema (Ukraine). The winner artist will be selected and announced during the exhibition and awarded a cash prize of 25,000 EUR.
The Paulo Cunha e Silva Art Prize, created by the City Council of Porto in 2015 as a tribute to the former Councillor for Culture, Paulo Cunha e Silva, is biennial and aimed at artists under 40 who have held no more than one solo exhibition in an “internationally renowned” institution or art space. Paulo Cunha e Silva was a doctor, art critic and curator, and his professional activity was always linked to theoretical reflection on contemporary art. His critical and broad vision of culture and his remarkable ability to create connections and to mobilize agents from all artistic domains have left a permanent mark on the city of Porto.
The jury—which in the first Prize edition is comprised by the curators João Laia and Vicente Todolí, and the artists Meg Stuart and Julião Sarmento—analysed the portfolios of artists selected by a group of 16 curators, nominated by the four jurors: Benjamin Weil, Catherine Wood, Elena Filipovic, Hans Ulrich Obrist, João Ribas, Kestutis Kuizinas, Lisette Lagnado, Luís Silva and João Mourão, Luk Lambrecht, María Inés Rodríguez, Nancy Spector, Nuria Enguita Mayo, Pablo León de la Barra, Roberta Tenconi, Suzanne Titz and Venus Lau. Each of the 16 curators nominated three artists for the prize and the jury selected the six finalists from the 48 shortlisted artists.
Curated by Guilherme Blanc and João Laia, the final exhibition of the Paulo Cunha e Silva Art Prize can be visited from June 9 to August 19 at Galeria Municipal do Porto.
The second edition of the Paulo Cunha e Silva Art Prize will be held on 2019/20 with the confirmed jury members John Akomfrah, Isabel Lewis, Margarida Mendes and Shumon Basar.
The Galeria Municipal do Porto hosts a regular programme of exhibitions and events dedicated to the contemporary visual arts, also developing specific projects in design and architecture. With the mission of presenting exhibitions that reflect on recent trends in contemporary artistic and discursive production, its programme promotes research, exchange and dissemination of ideas stimulating debate surrounding the arts.
