The inaugural edition of Oslo Biennial First Edition is scheduled to open on May 25, 2019. The biennial will be curated by Eva González-Sancho and Per Gunnar Eeg-Tverbakk, the team behind a two-year, research-based pre-project entitled OSLO PILOT that has laid the groundwork for the forthcoming Biennial. The name, conceptual framework and format of the biennial will be made available in the coming months. Oslo Biennial First Edition is initiated and owned by the City of Oslo, Agency for Cultural Affairs.

A biennial in public space as conceived by Oslo Biennial First Edition demands new approaches and premises for art practice and curating, capable of embracing the full potential of art in the public sphere. Oslo Biennial First Edition operates within the very complex and shifting flux of public spheres. This means adapting the biennial format to encompass a particular set of art practices and orientations, and move beyond the monumental scale of commissioned sculptures in public space. Among other initiatives, Oslo Biennial First Edition will act as a producer of works of art in public spaces. The artworks will be subject to a carefully, considered series of conditions, conceived to make it possible to cast a range of other players or agents in the role of producer—artists, city milieus, the audience itself.

Last, but not least, the Biennial is concerned with outreach, learning and the transmission of contemporary art in the public sphere, and in how to address art audiences as a possibly unknown entity (more or less engaged), passers-by, as individuals who come up against art randomly in the course of their daily routine.

In response to its ambitions—to establish the necessary tools and infrastructures for thinking about, discussing, and producing art in Public Space, as well as fostering and developing art-in-the-making within Oslo’s existing arts milieu—Oslo Biennial First Edition has recently opened its premises at a building located in Oslo’s historic centre. This will bring together under one roof the Biennial’s offices, a Biennial Visiting Artists Program, spaces dedicated to the Biennial’s seminar and discussion program, as well as 60 studios available to Oslo-based artists on subsidized leases from the City of Oslo.

An ambitious project of this nature demands a dedicated team, which we are currently seeking to expand. To this end we are pleased to announce these opportunities:
