By focusing on galleries that limit their booths to one or two artists, as well as by offering a series of specially curated sections, ARCOmadrid continues to consolidate its role as the art fair that offers “a closer look” at the contemporary art of today.

ARCOmadrid 2019—the 38th annual edition of the fair—will take place from February 27 to March 3. With the Spanish art market continuing its resurgence, a total of 203 galleries from 30 different nations will converge in the Spanish capital, along with numerous collectors, museum directors, curators and professionals from around the world. In addition, Peru will be featured as the guest nation at ARCOmadrid 2019, reinforcing the fair’s position as a bridge between Europe and Latin America.

ARCOmadrid 2019 will offer a mix of established galleries—some joining the fair for the first time, others long-standing participants—along with a selection of newly launched, more experimental galleries. Among established galleries making their debut at ARCOmadrid’s General Programme are Meyer Riegger, Rodeo and Timothy Taylor; returning galleries include Alexander and Bonin, Carlier Gebauer, Chantal Crousel, Edward Tyler Nahem, Esther Schipper, Fortes d´Aloia & Gabriel, Gregor Podnar, Hauser and Wirth, König Galerie, Raffaela Cortese and Thaddaeus Ropac. Many of these galleries will present booths of only one or two artists, offering visitors an opportunity to consider the art on view more closely and in-depth, in contrast to the usual art fair experience.

Parallel to its General Programme, ARCOmadrid 2019 has organized a series of curated sections, with an emphasis on cutting-edge artists and art works. Dialogues, curated by Catalina Lozano and Agustín Pérez Rubio, will feature galleries showing one or two artists in their booths and presenting work created especially for the fair. Among these galleries are Luisa Strina, DVIR, Patricia Ready, PPOW and Proyectos Ultravioleta. Opening, curated by Tiago de Abreu Pinto and Ilaria Gianni, will consist of a selection of 21 innovative young galleries from around the world, including Baril, Bombon Projects, Clima, Embajada, Francisco Fino, Rodríguez, Sé and Sindicato. And Special Projects will consist of a series of works installed throughout the fair, many of them specially-commissioned, large-scale works that call for a different and more individualized viewing experience.

ARCOmadrid 2019 will continue to host its highly anticipated programs of professional activities, inviting critics, curators, museum directors and leading art world figures to participate in panel discussions and professional encounters. Divided into sections titled Forum and Professional Encounters, these events offer a broad spectrum of art world professionals a unique platform for discussion and debate, while they in turn can share their visions and voices with the rest of the fair.

With Peru as the guest nation, ARCOmadrid 2019 will present a special section—curated by Sharon Lerner, the chief curator of contemporary art at Lima’s MALI Museum—dedicated to the work of Peru’s leading artists, whether based in their native country or abroad. In addition, a series of satellite exhibitions and projects featuring Peruvian artists, art collections and art institutions  will be hosted by art institutions throughout the Spanish capital, coordinated by Fietta Jarque. With events and programmes such as these, ARCOmadrid has firmly established itself as a premier  platform for the Latin American art market, offering an ideal point of encounter for Latin America’s and Europe’s top galleries, artists and collectors.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote contemporary art collecting at every level and among different generations, ARCOmadrid has invited

300 collectors and 200 art world professionals from 40 different nations as part of its International Collectors programme. In addition, ARCOmadrid has launched a series of initiatives designed especially for new collectors, inviting a group of young international collectors to the fair, as well as offering advisory services for beginning collectors.
