In September 2019 the Piet Zwart Institute launched two highly focussed study paths that address the new demands and opportunities of the current media landscape. We are currently calling for applications for the 2019–21 cohort.

Master of Arts in Fine Art & Design: Lens-Based Media is committed to lens-based image making as an art and craft with distinct and formative long histories. Within the program you will be encouraged to employ your developing fluency and skills to create ambitious and distinctive new approaches to both cinema and photography. The specialisation prepares students to forge significant careers and make a meaningful contribution to contemporary lens-based culture.

The course is taught by core tutors with international reputations in their respective fields: course Leader Simon Pummell is a BAFTA and BIFA winning filmmaker and animator and 2009 Harvard Film Study Center Fellow currently completing his fourth feature film; Barend Onneweer is the owner and director of the established NL film VFX company R3MWERK; Ine Lamers is a visual artist with a practice based in photography that has been exhibited extensively nationally and internationally; David Haines is a visual artist working with a range of media, predominantly drawing and video exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum, Turner Contemporary, The Drawing Room London among many other museum shows.

Master of Arts in Fine Art & Design: Experimental Publishing is a research oriented master programme, with a strong emphasis on the connection between practice and theory. The course focus on practice-led research will equip you with both conceptual and technical skills to develop projects and works within the field of cultural production.

The focus on publishing is twofold: first, publishing as the inquiry and participation into the technological frameworks, political context and cultural processes through which things are made public; and second, publishing as the desire to expand the means of discourse circulation beyond print media and its direct digital translation, to create publics in the age of post-digital networks.

The course welcomes practitioners from different backgrounds and approaches publishing from the perspective of multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary practices, in order to explore a broad range of methods and workflows, as well as to invent new ones.

The Piet Zwart Institute houses the international Master programmes of the Willem de Kooning Academy at Hogeschool Rotterdam. Since 1999 it has been dedicated to promoting study and research in the fields of art, design and art education.
