SOMA General Director
SOMA seeks a person to serve as SOMA’s general director, starting in February 2019.
SOMA is a non-profit organization founded in Mexico City in 2009. SOMA emerged from the initiative of a group of artists that joined forces to create a unique platform in the field of contemporary art in Mexico and abroad.
SOMA is a space that encourages horizontal discussion, collective interaction and critical thinking, where Mexico City’s different creative communities are considered. SOMA’s mission includes promoting dialogue and critical analysis of society, while furthering the professional development of artists. Its mission is supported through three distinct programs: Academic Program (PES), Soma Summer, and Miércoles de SOMA.

Candidate’s profile
SOMA seeks a candidate with a global vision who excels at working collaboratively within the context of a dynamic non-profit. As part of a 10-member team, the candidate will have the responsibility of establishing and facilitating the general creative direction of the organization. As such, the director must oversee SOMA’s day-to-day operations to effectively execute SOMA’s mission.
The candidate must possess advanced knowledge of contemporary art, as well as experience in cultural and human resource management and fundraising. In addition to directing SOMA’s staff, the candidate will work hand-in-hand with SOMA’s artists council, the advisory council, and the board to provide an enriching experience for participants and faculty. The director oversees SOMA’s finances and works with an administration team.
The successful candidate will initially serve for three years, with the possibility of continued employment beyond that point, to be determined upon review.
Position’s duties
The successful candidate will:
–Ensure that SOMA’s programs are carried out according to the structure already established and the organization’s mission
–Secure SOMA’s expenses through the development of fundraising strategies
–Research and propose improvements across the organization
–Oversees day-to-day operations
–Manages the accounting and
–Supervises SOMA’s staff and determines hires
–Maintains a healthy rapport with SOMA’s community (staff, participants, artists council, advisors council, and board)
Qualifications and requirements
–Education in art history, visual arts, cultural management or the like
–Professional experience of at least 3 years in management and/or fundraising
–Leadership skills, dynamism and initiative to solve problems and propose creative solutions
–Conflict management
–Ability to foster and maintain national and international institutional relationships
–Excellent written and oral communication
–Fluent English and Spanish both written and spoken
