Art & Fashion
January 14–May 19, 2019
“It’s rare for this art form to be treated with such reverence and respect”. David Downton.
“With this exhibition, Museo ABC is giving fashion illustration the status that it deserves, because it is ART. We are inspired by fashion but we create also new worlds”. Laura Gulshani
“I don’t know any museum that shows the work of so many fashion illustrators at one time, which enormously valorizes the discipline”. Richard Haines
Museo ABC presents #FINAESTAMPA_, the first great exhibition that features artists who work with fashion and illustration. It gathers a total of twenty-two international artists—both emerging and well established. It’s a unique chance to see more than 150 original works. This is the first time that this discipline has been presented in a museum. #FINAESTAMPA_ has been curated by the designer and journalist Jesús Cano. His agency, Cano Estudio has designed the exhibition and the catalogue.
Thanks to the digital revolution and the social networks, fashion illustration is currently experiencing an unprecedented boom. Experiencing what is considered its Second Golden Age, this is the moment to vindicate it as an art form by itself. #FINAESTAMPA_ proves there are no boundaries between art and illustration. Here we find minimalist, expressionist or even conceptual works and 22 artists from different generations that have been gathered for the first time.
The show begins with the signature of such masters as Mats Gustafson, David Downton, Aurore de la Morinerie, François Berthoud, Jean-Philippe Delhomme, Unskilled Worker, Gill Button, Hiroshi Tanabe, Jason Brooks, Tanya Ling or Jordi Labanda. And it continues with leading figures like Ricardo Fumanal, Richard Haines, Jowy Maasdamme or Richard Kilroy.
More than half of the selected artists are women who are setting the pace. This includes artists such as Blair Breitenstein, Laura Gulshani, Inés Maestre, Hellen Bullock, Amelie Hegardt, Cecilia Carlstedt and Rosie McGuinness.
About Museo ABC
It is located in Madrid, in a modern building of almost 4,000 m2, which hosts the Colección ABC. Inaugurated in 2010, it hosts some 150,000 drawings and illustrations created by over 1,500 artists. Its objectives include maintaining, studying and disseminating the Colección ABC, as well as designing and developing activities related to drawing and contemporary illustration, comic, animation, graffiti, among others. It has become a top site in these disciplines and thanks to its collection and programming, it is a unique proposal in Spain and Europe.
The exhibition is part of the official programme of the second edition of Madrid Design Festival and counts with the collaboration of NH Collection Hotels.
