Sierra Nevada College (SNC)’s low residency MFA-IA program just completed our most recent summer residency.

This summer’s student body included 6 brand new students, 6 graduating thesis students who installed a group exhibition in the Garage Door Gallery at the Holman Arts and Media Center on campus, and seven students presenting public midway projects onsite at Sagehen Field Research Station.

The faculty line up included: Walter Kitundu, Amy Khoshbin, Macon Reed, Ashley Stull Meyers, Roman DeSalvo, Gabie Strong and Matt Freedman. Visiting artists included: Julie Weitz, Joseph DeLappe, Whiz World, Anne Sprinkle and Beth Stephens

With seven separate courses ongoing, the 10-day intensive was filled to the brim. Highlights of note were thesis student, Gillian Delear’s collaborative experimental performance of GreenGirls JP, exploring the processes of play and imporovisation, an “interactive dinner” produced and conducted by the Whiz World Collaborative onsite at Sagehen, and finally the experience of an abundance of butterflies in the Sierras this season.

There are a few spots still open for new graduate students to begin the MFA-IA program next winter 2020—please see our website for application instructions here. The priority scholarship deadline for winter 2020 is October 15, 2019.

The MFA-Interdisciplinary Arts Program is low-residency, and consists of two intensive ten-day, on-campus residencies during summer and winter sessions over the course of two and a half years. During the fall and spring semesters, students work in their home studios and continue relationships with faculty mentors and fellow colleagues remotely through online seminars and other points of contact.

Sierra Nevada College is a small, liberal arts college, located three blocks from Lake Tahoe, within a national forest, on an easily accessible campus in Incline Village, NV. The low-residency MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts is a locus for creative problem solving, fostered by creative thinking with an emphasis on community. The experience and exploration of embodied place is a central element of this distinctive program, encouraging students’ multi-dimensional relationship with their environment both in the Tahoe Basin and within their own communities.
